Tokyo revision, by Zeroperzero
Homemade subway maps have long been a pursuit of cartography nerds and transit lovers, a result of the perennial debate between the proponents of usability, who favor more distorted, schematic designs (hallo, Londoners), and the realists, who want more geographic accuracy in their maps (yo, New York). There's also a section of pirate designers that admires the subway map as pure art, and interprets it as such, with wild, fun results. Following our slideshow on the world's most impressive subway maps -- and in the hope of generating discussion about how metro maps can be improved -- we gathered a selection of our favorite alternative (uh, underground?) urban rail maps.
