Sneak Peek: New Straw + Wool Stool by Ryan Frank

Isabella Stool by Ryan Frank photo

A sneak peek from Ryan Frank can only mean one thing. Yes, the London Design Festival is drawing near and getting a preview of new work by this star eco-designer is always a good way to get warmed up for the big event. Next month Eco, Olivia Firth and Nicola Giuggioli's green lifestyle store, will be transformed into a showroom for the duration of the festival and there, alongside 7 other specially selected designers, Ryan Frank will debut 'Isabella'. Ryan tells us that the new stool takes its inspiration from the traditional carved seating of his native South Africa. Wanting to avoid the use of hardwoods the designer has chosen to use a section of strawboard, a formaldehyde-free solidly compressed material, and has covered the form in 100% wool felt. The soft brightly coloured felt contrasts beautifully in look and feel to the natural coloured strawboard. Stacking up to create a totum pole effect a collection of 'Isabellas' might pass for a dramatic sculpture rather than a pile of stools.

Congratulations to Ryan who, with amazing consistency, creates fun and funky eco- friendly furniture. His work not only makes great use of sustainable materials, but often includes cultural references to African traditional crafts which gives a depth and texture not always found in contemporary design.
