Istanbul's Green-Design Innovators

Paper Possibilities:

Designer Devran Mursaloğlu wasn't available to chat, so I don't know whether her dramatic designs are made from recycled paper, but her sturdy, circular seats and ethereal lamps certainly showcased the possibilities of working with paper of any kind.

Lighting the Way:

Sevcam Yardım's bamboo light, which has been around long enough to get props from various design blogs, combines a nature-inspired look with energy-efficient LED lights to create an ecofriendly outdoor lamp. A nice example of form meeting function.

Trash into Treasure:

© Jennifer Hattam. Bowls made out of old plastic bottles, by Gülnur Özdağlar Güvenç.

These beautifully delicate bowls by Gülnur Özdağlar Güvenç were a bit reminiscent of Dale Chihuly's work, but instead of blown glass, the artist uses old PET plastic bottles. She also transforms this all-too-common type of trash into jewelry and lamps, displayed on her website and for sale in her etsy shop.

Referencing both William McDonough and the ancient alchemists in describing her design philosophy, Güvenç imagines a world of "elegant ladies wearing PET jewelry, linen covers ornamented with PET shells, the dining tables decorated with PET bowls sitting next to fine china, PET chandeliers taking the place of crystal chandeliers." And what a cool green world that would be.
