Houseboats — they inspire the imagination and, if you're fortunate enough, they can be an inexpensive, and environmentally-sound house to own. Today though, it's much harder to find space for a houseboat, due to shrinking access to waterfronts and stricter zoning laws being passed in most states. The The Houseboat Book is a great pictorial overview of the different styles of houseboats out there. It's kind of a coffee table book, it does give you a sense of what's its like to own a houseboat, and briefly covers some the laws and issues involved, including the eco-impact of houseboats. For the more adventurous builders among us, there's the Handmade Houseboat: Independent Living Afloat, which describes you how to build your own houseboat from scratch, using basic materials from unusual sources.
