When I wrote about Architect Barbie I complained bitterly about her house, sort of cross between Karim Rashid and Charles Addams. The folks at the American Institute of Architects didn't think much of it either, and having a lot of time on their hands these days like most architects, they ran a competition to design a better green home for LEED Accredited Architect Barbie. They have created a short list of five and you can vote for your favourite.
Like a lot of LEED projects, they are long on green gizmos; a sampling is this list from the project shown below:
And like a lot of LEED projects, it misses the real meaning of sustainability, being a too-big monster home for a single woman, with three cars in the garage (although one is a plug-in hybrid). And really, she keeps giraffes as pets.
But, to her credit,
Barbie has a south facing vegetable garden and several fruit trees. She also has plenty of bicycle parking so her friends can visit and her home is next to bike path that goes all the way to the beach!
My favourite is this one, with a living wall in the kitchen, an "H2Orchard" The designers claim that it:
blends sociability and sustainability that is as suitable for client meetings as it is for cocktail parties, embodying a "dream pink, live green" ideology.
vote for your favourite at the AIA Architect Barbie Dream House competition.
