Eco-Cute Heat Pump Uses CO2 As Refrigerant, Reduces Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Len Puhacz of Mycom Canada with the Eco-Cute Heat pump
Another dirty little secret about heat pumps (beside the fact that I think their benefits are oversold) is that eventually, they will leak and lose their refrigerant into the atmosphere, where it has a global warming potential of up to 1900 times that of CO2. Mayekawa has solved this with its dreadfully named Eco-Cute heat pump by using carbon dioxide as the refrigerant. It is only offered in industrial sizes, but not only eliminates the more harmful refrigerants, but has a COP (coefficient of performance) of 8, compared to the usual 3 to 4 from conventional heat pumps.
It is all pretty complicated, so I asked Len Puhacz, sales manager for Mycom Canada, to explain. More at Myekawa.
