Derek Chen's new design group — Council — launched their first collection at ICFF this year. While Council's furniture could be a lot more sustainable -powdercoating steel makes it harder to recycle; wood veneer can be replaced by bamboo- the meticulous build quality and trend-free style of the pieces means they might be the last that you (or your grandchildren) buy.
I appreciated the aesthetic and consumption-limiting aspects of Derek's "Section" modular furniture. The diagonally cut rectangular shapes can function as a room's seating, storage, display, and nearly anything else that standard furniture affords. The natural wool felt finish is nice, but using natural resins, bamboo, or any of the myriad green materials that were on display a few booths down would have made these blocks a far better system.
