Barratt Boxes Go Green

We normally ignore or are critical of ugly suburban houses even if they are full of green goodies, thinking that sustainability should a) be well designed and b) change the way we live rather than just stick expensive bandaids on our current development and planning model. Barratt Developments, the UK's biggest tract builder, has built some Barratt Boxes with some interesting features: Rainwater harvesting. Ground source heat pumps. Wind Turbines. Sustainably harvested lumber. Photovoltaics. Too bad none of them are for sale- it is a demonstration of "how Britain’s leading housebuilder is confronting the challenge of climate change. It’s part of our contribution to a cleaner, safer, greener environment." Right. By building seven banal empty houses. ::Eco-Smart Potemkin Show Village via ::The Guardian
