MooShoes, Inc. is a vegan-owned business that sells an assortment of cruelty-free footwear, bags, t-shirts, wallets, books (mainly cookbooks) and other accessories. It is the first cruelty-free store of its kind in New York City. When I first decided to drop out of the School for Meat Eating, I committed to cutting out other less-than-humane things like leather jackets, honey and shoes made from dead animals. This was no easy step, I’d been an avid snake-skinned cowboy boot wearer for close to 10 years. Around the same time, I was asked to replace my urban-chic-freelance-designer uniform with a suit and tie for a big project outside of my Wonderful Town. Formal business attire wasn’t part of my wardrobe. Plus to make my new found vegetarian-decision more difficult, I was informed that I would need to remit fashion for a more conservative patent leather belt and black dress shoe look. How would I be able to live my double life of earth-advocate while mingling with the more conventional parts of society? I thought I would have to succumb to the pressure of buying normal footwear…but just as I was losing hope, I discovered MooShoes – and realized I needn’t betray my inner cowhugger for my career.
MooShoes was founded in 2001 by two sisters, Erica and Sara Kubersky. It was a close encounter with the mooing-kind during a family trip to an Israeli kibbutz that caused, the then-eight-year-old, Erica to first decide to become a vegetarian. And eight years later, her sister Sara, got her to go full vegan.
Maybe you’ve decided to go vegan or be a weekday vegetarian or you just don’t like the idea of wearing dead animals. You’ve done the research and found, like many others, that eating meat is no good for the environment. Everybody’s doing it – from Joaquin Pheonix to Natalie Portman (meow!), Hollywood is making animal-loving HOT! The sisters have carved out a niche to help you go greener.
