Dear Internet, my follicular situation is, in a word, hairy. We're talking about a greasy scalp prone to flaking and dry, split ends that cry out for succor (or at least beg to be butchered out of their misery). Which is why I was intrigued when Saaf's Organic Enriching Hair Oil promised to condition, strengthen, and shine (the Holy Trinity of haircare), while diminishing the appearance of split ends and quashing dandruff in one fell swoop. The mop-coddling and vegan-friendly tonic, which is chockablock with organic cold-pressed oils (sesame, mustard seed, neem) for deep conditioning, is high in selenium and zinc, the lack thereof which may contribute to thinning manes. Free of alcohol, added fragrance, or synthetic additives (the benzyl salicylate, benzyl benzoate, and eugenol listed are natural constituents of the essential oils), Saaf's hair oil uses a combo of steam-distilled rosemary, bay leaf, and ylang-ylang, along with vitamin E, to coax fuller, stronger locks.
The box directs you to use a small amount for daily conditioning or to massage the oil into your scalp twice a week as a "deep penetrating treatment," which I dismissed immediately because, hello, oily noggin. Instead I ran a dime-size dollop through the ends of my tresses, while breathing in the heady, uplifting floral musk. And lo, my wilted thatch perked right up—practically glistened, in fact—although it very nearly slipped into oil-slick territory. This, boys and girls, is the hard stuff, not to be used without adult supervision or, at the very least, an extremely judicious hand.
I left the oil in my hair overnight (per instructions) and washed it with a dab of shampoo the next day, skipping my usual conditioner. The result was a happy medium: lustrous without looking like I dipped my head into a tub of lard, exceptionally manageable without that heavy, weighed-down feeling. Not that I'm splitting hairs or anything.
