Inspired by history and ancient ideas, from Egyption and Ancient Greece to Mod, Pleet's design aesthetic is mystical meets modern. The Brooklyn-based designer shows many signature silhouettes and styles, including rompers, one-piece bathing suits, and capes, with added details, such as square cut-outs throughout. The result: a cohesive collection in earthy tones, from peach and rust to teal and black.
Post presentation, I caught up with the designer backstage for an interview. Pleet explained that she wanted to take her inspiration to another level -- beyond her trip along Iceland's Ring Road, which inspired Fall 2011.
Instead, she looked to history and ancient ideas, from Egyption and Ancient Greece to Mod, and thought of goddesses from another generation. Pleet translates this to her collection with interesting ways of contouring the body with twists and weaving of fabric. She employs traditional tailoring techniques, clearly inspired by the twists and ties of a toga.
As for sustainable fabrics this season. The designer kept it simple with silks, organic cotton, and silk linens. "I wanted to keep it really natural, just beautiful fabrics that wear really well and wash easily," Pleet explains. "Nothing is shiny. Fabrics are muted but really glamorous."
Pleet's collection as a whole is more cohesive than past collections. The colors work together as do ever-present details such as the shape of a square that appears in the pattern on a shift dress and as a cutout in other dresses.
