Add two more bold-faced names to the celeb-designer gravy train—or three, rather, if you count Punky Brewster's eco-friendly baby clothing collection.
Grammy-award winning chanteuse Alanis Morissette and Oscar-nominated actor Woody Harrelson, are the public faces of Reco Jeans, a soon-to-be-launched lline of recycled-denim jeanswear that's an industry first in terms of scope. (Reco claims to make its jeans with up to 300 percent more recycled denim fibers than its competitors.)Making recycled denim is no cakewalk, Reco says, noting that most recycled denim products comprise only 1 to 3 percent recycled denim.
There have been limitations in the industry because recycled denim fibers are weaker and jeans with higher percentages of recycled fiber were known to rip and wear much faster than all new denim jeans.
Through a proprietary technique, Reco Jeans has been able to create jeans with a high percentage of recycled fabric that last—because durability is an important part of sustainability.
