To mark the launch of the Aveda 2009 Earth Month campaign, the skincare and cosmetics company will be selling a limited-edition soy candle to raise funds and awareness for clean-water rights worldwide.
Packaged in 95 percent post-consumer recycled glass, as well as cartons printed with soy ink on 100 percent "make-readies," the French-inspired Light the Way candle ($10) features 100 percent EcoCert-certified organic ingredients such as lavender, lavandin, and clary sage harvested from the south of France. Aveda will be donating all the proceeds of its candle sales—a potential $1 million if every candle is sold—to its global Earth Month partner, the Global Greengrants Fund, to champion clean water as a basic human right through community-based water projects across the globe.
Walk for Water
This year, Aveda will also be introducing the Aveda Walk for Water Campaign, a new global initiative uniting employees and customers in a series of walks around the world to bring the issue of clean-water rights to the fore, while raising some much-needed cash for local organizations working for the cause. Taking place in over 50 cities this month, the walk will stretch 4 miles (6 kilometers), which is the average distance that women in developing countries traverse to collect water every day.
