This past week, MODO launched what it's touting as the first line of affordable luxury eyewear to make environmental responsibility a priority. Its Earth Conscious Optics collection for men and women marries recycled stainless steel and repurposed plastic.

Available at MODO's NoLita boutique in New York City and select optical stores across the nation, the diverse range of classically inspired shapes, styles, and colors also have an altruistic bent: For every pair of eco-friendly frames purchased, MODO will plant a tree with the nonprofit Trees for the Future.

Named for and inspired by Brazilian professional skateboarder Bob Bunquist, the latest entry in Oakley's Gascan line honors its namesake's support of environmental initiatives in more ways that one. Not only is the frame made from excess materials left over from the manufacture of other eyewear, but it's also embellished with bamboo accents and wrapped snugly in a 100 percent certified-organic bamboo bag.

Another plus: A portion of proceeds goes to the Action Sports Environmental Coalition, an organization Burnquist co-founded in 2001.
