The London Underground subway system is 150 years old on January 9, today. That is remarkable in itself and worthy of note, but there is another aspect about the London Underground that is also important, and that is it's incredible influence on the world of design.

Nicholaus Pevsner credits the London Passenger Transport Board with "the greatest aesthetic integrity" in the 1942 Architectural Review.

That this is so, that the LPTB stands for an architecture unequalled by transport design in any other metropolis, and that it has by means of its buildings and publicity become the most efficacious centre of visual education in England, is due to one man.
