The crisp air, the feel of the wind on your face, the smell of fresh snow: These are the things that skiers crave. And if you want to get your fix without the neatly groomed trails, pint-sized snowboarders on the bunny hills, and the endless line for the chair lift, gear up for a trip to Silverton Mountain.
The skiing at Silverton is not for beginners: One chair lift takes you up, and then you're required to hike to the start of the trails. All of the runs are black diamond, and fewer than 475 people are allowed on the mouton at one time. There's no running water on the mountain, and you're required to bring or rent your own avalanche equipment. It's skiing at its most natural.
Don't miss the winners in our other seven categories, announced throughout the week here: Best of Green 2011.
