On Bali, a Hotel Chain Focuses on Luxury Eco Resorts, With Stunning Results

Nestled in rice paddies, about an hour from Bali along treacherous roads, the beachfront Alila Villas Soori has the feel of a tropical paradise, with infinity pools and Balinese-style architecture by SCDA Architects that blends the 48 villas into their surroundings. After the horrific, death-defying traffic of Kuta, the isolation is a major draw.

The resort was my host for one night, and for me, it was also paradise as the first hot water shower experience in nearly a month of eco-travel in Indonesia -- not that you really need it in the scorching heat.
