Tile usually has little or no harmful VOC emissions and the clay or sand used to make it tends to be readily available, meaning it can be sourced locally. The drawback is tile is energy-intensive--ceramic tile fired twice tends to be stronger. Firing for clay-based tile is generally around 2200º F, according to a report by St. Olaf College (PDF). Also by Trend Group are Lux (left) and Sunshine (right), both containing up to 80 percent pre-consumer recycled glass.
