Design is the human capacity to shape and make our environments in ways that satisfy our needs and give meaning to our lives.
Created in 2002, the INDEX award is " the biggest design award in the world worth €500.000, and widely recognized as the most important design award in the world." It attracts hundreds of nominations and entries, whittled down to sixty finalists. The designs are chosen not because they are slick or gorgeous, but because they improve lives, addressing issues such as health, water, terrorism, sustainable transportation and care for the elderly.
TreeHugger will be at this year's ceremony, and looks at some of the finalists.
