Sonumbra

Another interactive work, "Sonumbra," takes the form of a glowing tree but is actually made of an innovative new textile with integrated solar cells and small LEDs.

Lightweight and flexible, the creation by Rachel Wingfield & Mathias Gmachl from U.K.-based design studio Loop.pH responds to its audience with light and sound patterns generated by the movement of people in the space around it.

"Sonumbra ... is designed to respond to the interplay and activity of the people orbiting the umbrella by casting a sonic shade of light," the designers write on their website. "[We] are working toward creating a free-standing canopy that is self-powered through PV technology and fully animated."
