Photo: A wild elk photographed in his namesake county

James Feuerstein encountered this elk in Elk County, Pennsylvania. Although the county was named for these animals, our photographer writes they were once completely hunted out of the state. “Wild elk were extirpated from Pennsylvania, but reintroduced successfully in 1913 with elk from Yellowstone.”
