Photo: White-tailed ptarmigan is a wonder of winter

728 of 1609

While North America's smallest grouse, the white-tailed ptarmigan, is streaked with brown and gray during the summer, this beautiful bird fades to pure white in the winter – a handy trick performed by a number of alpine creatures. What a beautiful way to ring in winter. Thank you to Tony LePrieur for braving the chill for this elegant shot taken in Kananaskis Country, Alberta.
