What a majestic creature this is, a tule elk (Cervus canadensis nannodes), wonderfully photographed by Sam McMillan at San Luis National Wildlife Refuge. These California natives were once abundant, but their numbers dropped to almost nothing before conservation efforts brought them back from the brink. There is now 22 herds comprising some 4,000 tule elk across the state.
