Photographer Donald Quintana writes that these Nutmeg Mannikin, also called Scaly-breasted Munia, are a controversial species in California because the species is non-native. “Nonetheless, it was a species that I had wanted to photograph for a long time,” he says. “A beautiful little bird, most of the ‘Wild’ birds are decedents of escaped caged birds originating from pet stores. Today a small flock of about 30 birds was flittering around the side of the road just asking to be photographed.”
