Photo: Belted kingfisher shoots through the sky

In describing the belted kingfisher, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology writes, "With its top-heavy physique, energetic flight, and piercing rattle, the belted kingfisher seems to have an air of self-importance as it patrols up and down rivers and shorelines."

They don't mention that at times, in flight, one can appear to have been shot straight out of a cannon! We love this minimalist take by photographer Rollie Rodriguez, shot at Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve in Los Angeles, California. It's cute and beautiful and humorous all at the same time, a perfect homage to the little river patrollers.
