Matthew “Matty” Smith captures the transition from air to water in this mesmerizing series of photos. He describes these half-underwater photos as “a parallel universe,” that capture both the suspense of diving into the water without knowing what lies below and also reveal the encounters below. There’s a certain alchemy to these images, they observe the state stage swimmers and divers feel as they plunge into the sea.
Smith travels around the world to dive and photograph these semi-submerged landscapes, and encounters all shapes and sizes of sea life. His work has won numerous awards, including the 2014 Ocean Geographic Magazine Pictures of the Year Award, and has been featured in Australian Geographic Magazine, Asian Geographic Magazine, and My Nikon Life Magazine.
