In the 1980s and 1990s, 14 of the leopards were tagged with radio collars--but today, none of those animals remain (in captivity, snow leopards have been known to live as long as two decades, but their lifespan in the wild is unclear). As part of the current project, the scientists have managed to collar eight different leopards; one was killed by a local herder and two lost their collars, so only five remain. The one shown here, Aztai, is named after the Mongolian word for lucky.
