Apparently the winner this year - the Fjords Region in Norway - was no surprise to anyone as it routinely ranks high by having an environmental management plan that is not just working but thriving. At 85 points, judges remarked that not only are local customs preserved, but the residents seem to be thriving thanks in part to their environmental management plan. Cruises in the area act as ferries for the local population. The remoteness of the area also acts a buffer keeping degradation due to tourism down. A short tourist season, thanks to the weather, helps to preserve Norwegian customs and lifestyle.
