The peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), also known as the duck hawk, usually feeds on smaller birds. Found throughout North American, this falcon was once considered an endangered species due to the widespread use of pesticides like DDT. Happily, since the DDT ban in the early 1970s, peregrine populations have largely recovered. Rick Derevan photographed this one in San Luis Obispo County, California.
