Photo: Ruby-throated hummingbird

Rick Derevan writes that ruby-throated hummingbirds are rare in California. He photographed this one in Arroyo Grande. According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, these birds tend to stay on the East Coast of the North America, and may winter as far south as Costa Rica.
