Photo: The oh-so-orange eye of a lesser sandhill crane

Sandhill cranes vary in size by region, the smallest sub-species is called is the “lesser” sandhill crane, and according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, breeds in the Arctic. This one was photographed in the Merced National Wildlife Refuge in Los Banos, California.
