California quail are the most beautiful little birds, even when they are at their puffiest. This male has puffed out his feathers to trap air, which will keep him warm against a chilly, foggy morning. They're often overlooked by locals as just a common part of the landscape but when they hold still long enough for you to really look at them, they finally reveal how gorgeous they are -- even when they're busy being all fluffed up in the cold.
