Another special trait of the elephant seal is that nose of theirs. The elongated nose serves two purposes. Far more pronounced in males than in females, it helps them to make exceptionally loud roaring sounds which boosts the intimidation factor when staking a claim on a section of beach and all the females on it. However, a second purpose for elephant seal noses -- both male and female -- is that it acts as a "rebreather", absorbing moisture from exhalations that helps minimize how dehydrated a seal gets while hauled out for months during the breeding season.
