On the night of Tuesday, April 20, an explosion rocked an offshore drilling platform, launching an intense effort to fight the ensuing fires and find the 11 people that went missing after the accident.

This photo shows the oil slick as it stretches out from the burning Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, more than 50 miles southeast of the tip of Louisiana.
