The rainforests of South America are perhaps best known as home to incredible biodiversity. It is no surprise, then, that this odd species of mushroom, Mycena luxaeterna, was discovered in one of the last remaining patches of Brazil's Atlantic forest.
The striking green glow of these mushrooms is rare but strangely not unique among fungi; at least 71 of the 1.5 million known species of mushroom exhibit some form of bioluminescence.
