The population of African penguins is just 10% of what it was one hundred years ago, and the birds are currently listed on Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. Much of the original declines in population were due to over-collection of eggs for food, but today the greatest threat comes from a lack of food due to overfishing local fish stocks. The real risk of oil pollution in also a threat.
