Before they began planting anything, Sprout City Farms had a soil test done and found deficiencies in nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic matter.

After seeking advice from Colorado State University Extension -- which provides farming advice -- and a few other sources, the team developed a plan to incorporate 1.5 inches of vegetable-based compost into the eight inches of topsoil that was tilled.
