Divine Chocolate is the only fair trade chocolate company that is owned by its cocoa farmers. Tired of relying on exploitative buying agents, a group of farmers from Ghana decided in the early 1990s that they would set up their own co-op, which would sell its cacao directly to the Ghanaian Cocoa Marketing Board. This alternative business model has allowed for greater efficiency, increased savings, increased involvement of women, better environmental standards for cocoa production, and records that are transparent, democratic, and accountable. The Divine chocolate bar was launched to compete with other mainstream bars in North America and the U.K. and it has done very well.
You can buy Divine Chocolate online, or find it in many Ten Thousand Villages stores.
