A pocket of Passivhaus projects popping up in Ontario cottage country

One of the complaints often made about the Passivhaus or Passive House standard of building is that it is expensive, perhaps a higher standard than people really need. Some have suggested that a pretty good house might be enough; others, like PHIUS or Passive House Institute US, suggest that it is overkill to demand the same high level of insulation in every climate.

So it was really surprising to find a hotbed of Passivhaus happening in little Minden, Ontario, two hours north of Toronto. I was invited on a tour set up by Passivhaus Canada and met the group in Minden.
