More than half a century ago, the great metabolist architect Kenzo Tange designed a “structural reorganization” of Tokyo with a huge development in Tokyo Bay, where logically there would be “a minimal risk of land speculation”. Now architects at Kohn Pederson Fox Associates are picking up on the idea with Next Tokyo 2045. They describe their project as one where they “introduce the spirit of Tange’s unrealized plan to the year 2045 by merging it with new engineering technologies and a strategy for high-density vertical development. Occupying the bay, but in a far smaller footprint, Next Tokyo explores future urban growth moving upward, rather than outward.”
