Live with nature, not on nature

Author Christopher Rawlins says Gifford had "a kind of intuitive feeling for the fragility of coastal landscapes." Gifford's beach designs had a wonderful sense of place. Instead of leveling the landscape in order to make way for a building, Gifford often built houses complementing the existing landscape. The way he described it was "to live with nature, rather than to live on nature."
