Covering an area of some 240 acres, the Botanical Garden has some impressive collections, such as 1,500 species or varieties of palms (with more than 20,000 individual examples), 600 examples of Araceae (phildendrons, anthuriums and calla lilies), and around 420 orchids in 334 species.

The garden design was initiated in 1989 by the renowned Brazilian landscaper Roberto Burle Marx. He shaped Bernardo Paz's thinking about how the place should develop.

Since 2005 things have moved ahead with great speed and the gardens have become a comprehensive living library for scholars and scientific research. Since it is a tropical and lush climate, with rain daily for six months of the year, things grow rapidly.
