Are you shopping for a baby gift? Here are some ideas for practical gifts that are reusable, green, and (hopefully) a bit unusual. As a mother with a new baby, I can attest to the fact that many of these items are favorites in our household and get used on a daily basis.

Wool diaper covers are really cool (in both senses of the word). Although the idea of wool seems counterintuitive on hot days, the fact is that wool covers breathe better than the usual plastic-like diaper covers because they are made of natural fiber.

Wool covers also naturally anti-bacterial and can absorb up to 30 percent of their own weight, making them great for babies who are heavy-wetters or have sensitive skin. They are thick, which means they can double as baby's shorts on summer days. If a family chooses to use wool covers, they will only need 3 to 4 covers for full-time diapering.

Give one or two covers, along with bottles of the special wool wash and lanolin needed to make the wool moisture-resistant.
