Innovative Mapping Project Tracks Gulf Oil With Kites and Balloons

The project started in the MIT Media Lab as a means of empowering "communities in cartographic dispute." Though the first application was in Lima, Peru, it was easy to adapt the tools and techniques to the Gulf coast.

Because the entire project is open source and in the public domain, it allows anyone to participate and gives a voice to everyone who lends a hand.
