The International Federation of Bike Messenger Associations has a lovely little collection of ancient cargo or work bikes. One from their online museum is this entry culled from the 1899 Tinkham Cycles catalogue.
The IFMBA notes that the delivery cart could be detached from the bike proper and used as a pushcart --an idea taken up 100 years later when the cart section of the trike is converted into a kids stroller. Apparently a variation was made, in which a cart section was replaced with a wheelchair platform -- again a concept revisited in more recent times.
And don't miss our two part collection of almost 50 modern day Cargo Bike Businesses.
