Electric vehicles have come a long way in the last few years, steadily gaining acceptance as a practical and sustainable form of transportation. This is especially true in cities, where most trips are short and space is at a premium. That's where the electric scooter comes in: Small, quick and zero-emissions, these vehicles are making a real dent in the automotive market.
And the auto industry is taking note: BMW, Honda, and VW all have electric scooters in production. These nine e-scooters -- either already on the market, or are on their way -- stand out from the pack.
The BPG Uno III
BPG Motors' Uno is without a doubt the most eye-catching and original electric scooters on the market. Called the "world's first real transformer," the Uno can ride as a regular scooter, or fold up and balance on its back wheels, like a Segway.
In "unicycle" mode, the Uno's turning radius drops to just three feet, so you can take it just about anywhere. The third generation Uno III will be available in early 2012, for between $5,000 and $7,500.
