Some speeches were made that nobody could hear over the noise of the stupid helicopter, there were so many media people pushing big cameras around that you couldn't get close. I won't go so far as to say that the media highjacked this event, but they certainly changed the tone of it radically. It was no longer a few cyclists honoring one of their own, it was a circus of cameras and microphones and choppers.
