Artist rendering of what a full scale floating wind power project might look like.
An interesting step forward in offshore wind power technology: Seattle-based Principle Power has deployed it's first floating offshore wind turbine off the coast of Portugal, the first time a floating turbine has been installed in the Atlantic Ocean.
Renewable Energy World reports the 2 MW turbine was assembled on land and then towed 217 miles into open water.
Principle Power says its WindFloat technology will,
...dampen wave and turbine induced motion, enabling wind turbines to be sited in previously inaccessible locations where water depth exceeds 50m and wind resources are superior. Furthermore, economic efficiency is maximized by reducing the need for offshore heavylift operations during final assembly deployment and commissioning.
