This UK-based company makes its pads and tampons from non-GMO, pesticide-free cotton that will not leach chemicals into the most sensitive part of your body. Nor will you be caught unprepared with its innovative monthly delivery service!
A British company called Time of the Month, which usually goes by its more ambiguous acronym TOTM, strives to make periods greener, safer, and hassle-free for women. TOTM sells a line of purely organic cotton tampons, pads, and panty liners that, unlike conventional menstrual products, will not leach chemicals into the most sensitive part of your body.
Why is this even an issue? Most conventional tampons, pads, and liners are made from synthetic materials such as viscose and rayon, which come from cellulose wood pulp. The process of making pulp is extremely wasteful, with an estimated 50 percent of each tree being wasted. The rayon is bleached with chlorine to make it whiter and surfactants are added to increase absorbency. Some are even scented with a spritz of perfume, which is loaded with awful hormone-disrupting phthalates. These man-made fibers can cause irritation, itching, and rashes, as well as headaches and dizziness due to the chemicals caught inside the material. To make matters worse, rayon fibers get trapped inside the body where they release dioxins and can cause small cuts and infections on vaginal walls.
Many pads are up to 90 percent plastic, which is the same as four plastic grocery bags. That’s a whole lot of plastic to be carrying around between your legs! It causes problems by reducing the flow of air and trapping heat and dampness that can lead to yeast infections, vaginal irritations, and allergies. TOTM reports: "In order to counter this situation a lot of women enter a spiral of excessive hygiene and the use of antifungal products that also attack the vaginal flora, altering its natural function, that of preventing infections."
Conventional products also contain glyphosate (found in 85 percent of non-organic tampons), which has been linked to cancer by the World Health Organization.
TOTM, on the other hand, makes its products from cotton that is non-GMO, organic, and fully biodegradable. TOTM’s cotton pads and tampons do not disintegrate and release fibers when wet, nor do they leach anything into your body because they are free from pesticides and other chemical treatments.
This is something that many women don’t think about. I certainly did not until I had my first baby and the midwife insisted that I not use regular pads during the post-partum period. The chemicals and fragrances in normal pads, she explained, can actually interfere with healing and cause more problems. As I learned more about detoxifying my beauty routine, it made sense to expand that awareness into all areas of body care. As TOTM states on its website, “You wouldn’t rub chemicals all over your face. So why put them in your v*gina?” (Sadly, though, many people do continue to rub chemicals all over their face.)
Some of you may point out that disposable menstrual products are wasteful regardless of how they're made. It's true there are excellent options available when it comes to reducing waste, such as the washable Diva cup and reusable cloth pads; however, it is not always practical to rely on these reusable items, especially when traveling or working outside the home for an extended period of time. In that case, it's good to know that clean, non-toxic products such as TOTM do exist.
TOTM offers a cool personalized delivery service, which allows you to select which products and how many you need, based on your typical menstrual cycle, and will send it in a discreet box to your house on a monthly basis. You’ll never have to worry about being caught unprepared! TOTM offers free worldwide delivery for orders over £30, which currently works out to around $43 USD.
