Made in Brooklyn, these high-end facial and body treatments come in attractive sustainable packaging and are made using traditional Ayurvedic philosophy.
Mullein & Sparrow is a line of beautiful, luxurious vegan skin care products, handcrafted in Brooklyn, New York. What sets this company apart from other vegan skin care brands is its deep-rooted dedication to Ayurveda, an ancient healing system from India that strives to balance mind, body, and soul. The products use traditional ingredients such as sandalwood, chickpea flower, jasmine, turmeric, coriander, and rose that are believed to enhance health, vitality, and luminosity, while fostering inner and outer beauty.
From the Mullein & Sparrow blog:
“Ayurveda is based on the premise that man is a creation of cosmic consciousness and what is present in the larger cosmos is also present in man. And as man is a microcosm of the greater universe, the five elements of Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth also exist within each individual.”
Founder Anit Hora was born in India before moving to the United States as a child. She writes about being surrounded by Ayurvedic practices without even realizing it: “When her parents moved her to New York City, they brought their ways with them. They would make strange concoctions whenever she would get sick and would constantly remind her what foods she should avoid. Anit happily ignored them as children do.”
As she grew older and traveled the world, Anit began to see the wisdom in her parents’ Ayurvedic teachings, which eventually led her to pursue a career in holistic aesthetics and herbalism. This resulted in the creation of Mullein & Sparrow, her line of fine hand-distilled, plant-based products.
These include aromatic hair and facial serums, cacao cleanser, coffee body scrub, dry shampoos, lavender and lemongrass-mint body oils, bath salts made of pink Himalayan salt and roses, and face toners. My favorite is the Facial Detox kit, which includes materials for a facial steam (organic herbs that detoxify the skin through steaming, but also by drinking in tea form) and a facial mask made of three clays and aloe vera powder. I can vouch for the fact that my skin feels incredible for days after using it.
The Mullein & Sparrow line also stands out for its attractive packaging — mostly glass jars with cork, metal, and glass stoppers, as well as paper bags. They are beautiful to see, and just as beautiful to use.
